Spindle Length for Vintage Peugeot Mercier Motobecane

 

Here are some spindles removed from older French bikes, to help calculate the spindle length for vintage Peugeot, Mercier, Motobecane and other French bikes. This can help with any chain line issues which can cause chain rub or gearing problems.

Taken off a Mercier bike with a Stronglight TS crankset. Getting the correct spindle length on a vintage build is crucial to how well your chainline is set up, which is the key to the smooth operation of the gears. This 122mm spindle is a standard size for Stronglight double cranks.

 

 

Peugeot PA 10 Square Taper Spindle

This spindle was fitted to a Peugeot PA 10 frame and has no branding, but actually weighs less than the Stronglight above. The crank fitted to it was a Stronglight 93. The drive side is 1.5mm longer than the Stronglight spindle fitted in a Mercier. According to Sutherland’s, a Stronglight 5 arm crankset should take a spindle of 121mm for a Peugeot bottom bracket. I measured 122mm for this one.
